Ten in the morning at the splash pad, and your toddler has found her rhythm. Run the loop, stop, check that you saw it, run it again. Her sunglasses are still on. Whether they're on at ten past has almost nothing to do with her and almost everything to do with six numbers on a toddler sunglasses size chart that most parents never open.
Sunglasses are the one thing a small kid wears that has to fit a face still under construction. Shoes get a half size up. Jackets get sleeves rolled. A frame that's 8mm too wide has no workaround at all. It just slides, all day, until a small hand gets tired of pushing it back up and solves the problem permanently by putting it in the sand.
What Those Numbers Actually Mean (Millimeters, Decoded)
Eyewear sizing looks like code because it is. Six measurements, all in millimeters, each describing something specific about how a frame meets a face.

Frame width: the full outside span, temple hinge to temple hinge. For a toddler this is the headline number, because it decides whether the pair sits on the face or hangs off it.

Lens width: how wide one lens is. That's a sun-coverage question before it's a style question.

Lens height: top to bottom. Matters more than parents expect, since light arriving over the top of a short lens is light the sunglasses aren't handling.

DBL, or distance between lenses: the bridge gap that crosses the nose. On a toddler, this number is doing work no adult frame ever asks of it.

Temple length: the arms, hinge to the bend behind the ear.

Frame height: overall top-to-bottom of the front.
Two of those carry most of the weight before age four. Frame width, because it sets whether the pair holds position at all. And DBL, because a toddler's nose bridge is barely there yet, so the bridge has to work by shape instead of by grip.

Shield frames start at Toddler (118mm wide, 115mm temple) and run up through Adult Giant at 147mm.
Notice the jump that matters most: Baby to Toddler is 10mm of frame width and 15mm of temple. That's a big step on a face this small, and it's why a hand-me-down pair from an older sibling almost never works, no matter how carefully it gets handed down.
Our chart lists Baby at roughly 0 to 24 months, Toddler at 2 to 4 years, Junior at about 5 to 10 and sometimes as young as three, and Teen at 11 to 16, all with the same caveat attached: depending on head size.
That caveat is the honest part. Age is a proxy for head size and a loose one. Two-year-olds arrive in a genuinely wide range, which is why pediatricians plot head circumference on a growth chart instead of assuming a number from a birthday. A big 18-month-old and a small three-year-old land in the same band constantly.
Use the age range to pick your starting point. Use the millimeters to make the actual call.
How to Measure a Face That Has No Interest in Being Measured
Nobody is holding still. Plan around that rather than fighting it.
The frame width check. Measure straight across the face, temple to temple, at the widest point above the ears. A soft sewing tape works, and so does a strip of paper against a ruler. You want the frame's total width within a few millimeters of that number. Slightly narrower is fine, and grips a little. Wider is the one that slides.
The bridge check. Look at the nose straight on. If the bridge is still flat and low, which it usually is under three, a frame with a shallow wide DBL sits better than one with a deep narrow one. This is the measurement doing the most invisible work in the whole chart.
The temple check. The arm should run flat along the side of the head and reach just past the ear before it curves. Arms that stop short push the frame forward and down. Arms that run long slide the whole pair backward until the lenses are sitting somewhere unhelpful, usually about a centimeter from where they're supposed to be.
The five-second sit test. Put the pair on, let go, and count. If they've moved before you get to five, the frame is too wide or the arms are too long. This test has never once been wrong.
All four take about ninety seconds, and they go considerably better if the kid is eating something at the time.
Why the Wrong Size Doesn't Just Look Wrong
This is the part a size chart never says out loud. A frame that doesn't fit stops protecting.
Oversized frames sit low and leave a gap along the top of the lens, which is precisely where overhead light gets in. They slide, too, and a sliding pair gets shoved back up by a hand that's been in the sandbox roughly nine times an hour. That's how lenses get scratched. Then the pair comes off entirely, and a pair in a tote bag is protecting nobody's eyes.
Undersized frames fail the other direction. Arms squeeze behind the ears, the bridge presses, and a toddler who's uncomfortable at minute two has a very direct way of filing that complaint.
The failure chain is short, and it's the same every time. Wrong size, slides, gets pushed up, gets annoying, comes off, disappears. We went through the whole thing in our post on why sunglasses slip on toddlers, because it's the single most common fit question we get.
Sun protection only counts while the sunglasses are actually on a face, and small faces take more UV than adult ones. The EPA is blunt about how much of a lifetime's UV exposure happens in childhood, and about wanting lenses that block 99 to 100% of UVA and UVB. Fit is what makes that number real. It's a safety spec wearing a cosmetic disguise.
When Your Toddler Lands Between Two Sizes
Happens constantly, usually somewhere around age three, and there's a rule that holds up.
Size down, not up.
A slightly snug frame in a flexible material stays put and eases to the face over a few wearings. A slightly large frame never gets smaller. It slides from day one straight through to the day it's lost. Buying up for room to grow is excellent thinking for rain boots and terrible thinking for anything balanced on a nose.
Two exceptions. If the arms are visibly digging in behind the ears, that's a genuine fit problem and the larger size is the right answer. And if your kid is between bands but sitting at the very top of the smaller one, you're a few weeks from the bigger frame anyway.

What a Size Chart Can't Tell You (The Honest Limit)
Millimeters describe a frame. They don't describe a face.
Two kids with identical head widths can wear the same frame completely differently, because cheekbone height, ear position, and nose bridge depth all vary, and not one of them appears on any chart. A frame that measures perfectly can still ride up on a kid with high cheeks, or slide on a kid whose bridge hasn't arrived yet.

That matters more for prescription pairs than for shades, and here's why. Sunglasses are returnable for any reason: wrong size, wrong color, kid took one look and said no. Prescription glasses aren't returnable for a size-choice mistake, because they've been made for one specific face and one specific script. The details are on our return policy. Sizing for Coverage, Not Just for Fit
One more layer, and it's the one that gets skipped.
A well-fitting frame with a small lens still leaves the outer corner of the eye open, and side light is a real thing at the beach, on snow, and in a stroller pointed the wrong way. Bigger lenses help. So does a bit of wrap, and so does a frame that sits close to the face instead of perched away from it.
For a toddler specifically, the shape that covers best is usually the one with the most vertical lens height, because a two-year-old spends a remarkable share of the day looking up at things. Heart and round frames run taller in the lens at every size on our chart, which is a genuinely useful thing to know when two shapes both measure right.
While you're checking numbers, check the tag too. UV400 means the lens blocks 100% of UVA and UVB rays up to 400 nanometers, the entire harmful spectrum, not just the easy stuff.
