Your baby is on a blanket at the edge of the lake, waving a wooden spoon he brought from home for reasons known only to him, watching the water do its sparkly thing. It's a good morning. It's also a lot of light, arriving from above and bouncing straight back up off the water.
Baby sunglasses UV protection comes down to a single number on a tag. Not the darkness of the lens. Not the price. One number, and most of the tiny frames on the internet don't bother to print it.
What Does UV400 Actually Mean? (The Number Is Doing All the Work)
Ultraviolet light gets sorted by wavelength, measured in nanometers. The shorter the wave, the more energy it carries.
UV400 means the lens blocks 100% of UVA and UVB rays up to 400 nanometers, the entire harmful spectrum, not just the easy stuff. That's the whole claim, and the number is the claim: 400 is the ceiling of the ultraviolet band, so a lens that filters everything below it has filtered all of it. UVC, the shortest band, gets absorbed by the atmosphere long before it reaches your blanket.
So "UV400" and "100% UVA/UVB" are two ways of saying the same thing. Either one on the tag is the answer you want.
The Label Problem (Why "UV Protection" on Its Own Promises Nothing)
"Blocks UV rays." "UV protective." "Sun safe."
Those are adjectives, not specifications. A lens that stops thirty percent of UVA can wear every one of them without technically lying, and plenty do. There's no number in the sentence, so there's no promise in it.
What you want is one of two things printed on the tag, the listing, or the little sticker stuck to the lens: UV400, or 100% UVA and UVB protection. If neither turns up, and the seller can't tell you, treat the pair as a toy. Cute, cheerful, and not eye protection.
Why a Dark Lens Without UV400 Is Worse Than Nothing
This is the part that catches thoughtful parents, because it runs backwards from intuition.
Your pupil answers to brightness. In bright light it contracts, and a smaller pupil lets less of everything in, UV included. Put a dark tinted lens with no UV filtering in front of that eye and you've told the pupil it's dim out here. The pupil opens. Now there's a wider door, and the light pouring through it hasn't been filtered.
So a dark lens with no UV rating hands the eye more UV than bare squinting would have.
Tint is comfort. The UV rating is protection. The two get set independently at the factory, which is why a pale lens can be fully UV400 and a nearly black one can be doing nothing at all.
Why Babies Need It More Than You Do
Three things stack up, and none of them are a reason to panic.
The lens inside a young eye is clearer than the one inside an adult eye. Yours has yellowed a little with the years, its own quiet form of sun protection. Your baby hasn't earned that yet, so more of what arrives goes straight through to the back of the eye.
Then there's the arithmetic of a baby's day. Strollers, blankets, car seats parked in the sun, long stretches outdoors at exactly the hours the light hits hardest. Kids bank a large share of their lifetime sun exposure before they ever set foot in a classroom.
And babies live low. Down at blanket height, next to sand, water, pale concrete, and snow, every one of which throws light back upward into a face that's already tipped toward the sky.
What Baby Sunglasses UV Protection Doesn't Cover (Three Blind Spots)
A UV400 lens protects the part of the eye sitting behind the lens. That's the whole of its job.
Light arriving from the sides, over the top, and up off the ground goes around the lens entirely, which is why coverage and shape matter nearly as much as the rating. A frame that curves with the face blocks a slice of that stray light. A flat rigid pair on a round baby face leaves a gap on each side you could park a stroller in.
Glare is a separate problem with a separate fix, and UV400 does nothing about it. Polarized lenses cut glare, the kind that bounces off water, snow, and the hood of the car, by filtering out the light waves that make your kid squint. Glare is also the half your baby will actually complain about, since UV is invisible and glare is what makes them scrunch up and turn away from the water you carried them out to see.
And a lens that isn't on the face protects nobody. On a baby, that makes fit and a strap part of the protection story, not accessories to it. A six-month-old will remove anything they notice on their head in roughly four seconds, and a pair that lives in the diaper bag has a UV rating of zero.
Reading a Tag in Ten Seconds
The whole checklist, in the order that matters:

UV400, or 100% UVA/UVB. No number, no sale.

Polarized, if you'd like your baby to tolerate the pair on a bright day.

Coverage that wraps instead of sitting flat across the face.

A frame that bends rather than snapping, with nothing small enough to work loose.

A strap, because see item four, and also because babies are tiny adorable wrecking balls who have opinions about headwear.
Notice that only the first one is about UV. The other four decide whether the first one ever gets a chance to do its job.

The Short Version
Find the number. UV400, or 100% UVA and UVB, printed somewhere you can see it. Tint tells you nothing, price tells you less, and a dark lens with no rating is the one genuinely bad option on the shelf. Get the number right, get the pair to stay on, and a sunny morning at the lake goes back to being a sunny morning at the lake.
