How to Get Prescription Glasses for Your Baby

The journey begins with a current prescription from a paediatric ophthalmologist or an optometrist who specialises in infant vision. The prescription for a baby includes the same core information as an adult prescription—sphere, cylinder, and axis—but the pupillary distance (PD) may need to be measured with a little more patience. For infants, a "binocular PD" is often provided rather than the "monocular PD" used for adults. If your doctor didn't include the PD on the prescription slip, we recommend contacting the office directly, as they usually have it on file.

Choosing the right frame for a baby is primarily about fit and material safety rather than just aesthetics. Our Bendees frame is our most flexible and softest option, fitting most little ones from birth to approximately 18 months. Our standard baby frame fits ages 6 months to 2 years, featuring a frame width of roughly 119–124mm. For the youngest babies, a frame that sits securely without creating pressure points on their soft temples is more important than anything else. To help with this, every pair ships with an adjustable strap that keeps the frame perfectly in place during their busy day of exploring.

All orders are completed with care in our San Diego facility and typically ship within 5–7 business days. We will build the custom prescription lenses into your chosen frame and ship them to you completely ready to wear. We also understand that a baby’s prescription can change rapidly as they grow in the first years of life. Because of this, we can recut new lenses for your existing Roshambo frames at a reduced cost. This means you don't have to start over with a brand-new frame every time their vision shifts, making it easier and more affordable to keep their sight crystal clear.

Why Baby Prescription Glasses Need to Survive More Than Adults' Do

Babies who need prescription glasses are among the most challenging eyewear customers in existence—and we say that with the utmost affection. It is a simple description of the daily reality that a 9-month-old cannot be reasoned with about why their glasses need to stay on their face. They will pull them off with surprising strength. They will throw them across the room. They will enthusiastically chew the temples as if they were teething toys. They will drop them from the high chair onto hard tile repeatedly. Simply put, baby prescription glasses need to be built to absorb all of that chaos without flinching.

Beyond the durability factor, early vision correction is incredibly important for long-term health. Babies who are prescribed glasses typically have conditions like significant hyperopia (farsightedness), anisometropia (different prescriptions in each eye), or early strabismus. These are conditions where consistent wear of the correct prescription from an early age has a meaningful, life-long impact on visual development and often prevents the need for more serious medical intervention later in childhood. Every day of non-wear is a day the developing visual system isn't receiving the crisp, clear correction it needs to map the world correctly.

Roshambo baby prescription glasses use our most specialized and flexible frame materials to meet this need. This includes our Bendees range, which is crafted from an exceptionally soft, "squishy" Italian material designed specifically for the delicate skin of babies and infants. Every single frame we produce is certified BPA-free, phthalate-free, lead-free, and rigorously tested for small parts safety to ensure they are as safe as they are strong. The lenses are precision-cut to your exact specifications in our San Diego facility. And because we are parents too, we know accidents happen: if your baby does manage to destroy them, our damage replacement guarantee covers a full replacement.
